I always feel uncomfortable when we give a large platform to a public figure who has harmed another person. We remember that he pleaded guilty to assault on a woman.
Wouldn't it be better to reserve such a forum for people who have fallen victim to such behavior?
Should a man like Mr. Lapointe have such a chance to improve his image?
Despite all these questions that came to mind, I came to the conclusion that this high-airtime interview was necessary.
Example of what not to do
Why do I think this content belongs on our screens on a Sunday evening?
Because Éric Lapointe showed what you shouldn't do under any circumstances: “I lost control. I have always had difficulty dealing with my emotions, but I have always been fortunate to have music as an outlet for dealing with my emotional dependency issues. Violence does not define me, I condemn it. I should have picked up my guitar that morning,” he says, returning to what he pleaded guilty to in 2020.
I think that there are many men who, without having done anything, recognize themselves in the words of Éric Lapointe and could be encouraged to seek help. That's why I also think that these types of interviews can have a positive impact on society.
If Mr. Lapointe's words can prevent even one woman from suffering with great violence and suffering that she is not entitled to, it will have been worth saying a word to her on Sunday evening.
