Met Gala 2023: Dress Code, Co-Chairs Announced for Karl Lagerfeld-Themed Event

Fans will soar at the 2023 Met Gala.

On Wednesday, Vogue announced the celebrities who will be hosting the fashionable red carpet and the official dress code for the May Day event, which will honor the late Karl Lagerfeld.

Anna Wintour has chosen Dua Lipa, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer and Michaela Coel to co-host the evening, which will celebrate Lagerfeld’s work for Chanel, Fendi, Chloé, Balmain and his eponymous brands.

The accompanying exhibition, entitled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, features 150 looks created by Lagerfeld over the course of his illustrious career, curated by Costume Institute curator-in-chief Andrew Bolton and longtime Lagerfeld collaborator Amanda Harlech. which as such acts as the creative advisor to the exhibition.

Appropriately, the dress code is simple: “In honor of Karl”.

While many stars have already worn Chanel on the Met Gala red carpet — including Anna Wintour, who was a close friend of Lagerfeld and almost exclusively wore his designs to the big event — Cruz will undoubtedly wear a dazzling Chanel number as a longtime muse and face of the brand.

The Vicky Cristina Barcelona actress even made her runway debut for Chanel after the designer’s death in 2019.

It remains to be seen whether guests will be wearing Lagerfeld originals from his nearly seven-decade career, latest looks from Chanel (which is now being designed by Virginie Viard, who was Lagerfeld’s right-hand man in the house), or just outfits inspired by the fashion legend, who was famous for her black and white clothes, fingerless gloves and powdered white ponytail.

Perhaps a brave soul will channel Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette — or the cat could potentially show up himself.
