Mexican football riots in Queretaro Atlas ended in death

A Mexican football game between Queretaro and Atlas ended in a horrific way on Saturday, when a fan riot was reportedly fatal.

The Liga MX match was suspended and did not resume after a pause at the 60th minute. The fans could be seen fighting in the Corregidor Querétaro stadium, from the stands to the pitch. Some of the images, not shared by Yahoo Sports, show several motionless bodies lying on the ground.

David Medrano Felix of TV Azteca an initial death toll of 17 was later reported, which remains unofficial while authorities deal with the fallout. Official report claimed that 44 people were injured, two of them seriously and no one died. Another report from the authority managing the emergency services had a number of wounded 22 people, all men.

Jalisco governor Enrique Alfaro himself claimed there were no deaths on Saturday night.

Liga MX President Mikel Arriola posted a statement on Twitter condemning the violencewhich roughly translates to:

Unacceptable and unfortunate violence at the Corregidora Stadium in Querétaro. As an example, those responsible for insecurity in the stadium will be punished. The safety of our players and fans is paramount! We will continue to report.

In a subsequent statement, Liga MX announced that the league had initiated an in-depth investigation into the incidents that took place both inside and outside the stadium and asked the Mexican Football Federation’s disciplinary commission to prepare for sanctions. Criminal cases will also be filed for acts of violence.

The statement confirms that some people have been hospitalized, but does not provide numbers or signs of death. The match will reportedly resume at a later date, as per league rules.

Governor of Queretaro Mauricio Curi also condemned the violencedemanding that the institutions involved be held accountable for what led to the riots, and Querétaro as well as Atlas released their own statements urging the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Hours later It is reported by TUDN of Mexico. that all Liga MX games scheduled for Sunday were suspended, that the league’s players’ union requested.
