Between June 12 and June 25, a total of 104 people died in Mexico as a result of an extreme heat wave that hit the desert north and the capital. Most of the deaths were caused by heat stroke or dehydration, according to a Department of Health report seen by AFP on Thursday, June 29.
Most victims were recorded in the industrial state of Nuevo Leon. About 64 people lost their lives due to the climatic conditions in this area in the northeast on the Texas border.
This is the third episode of a heatwave to hit the country since early 2023. At the end of June, a record 49 °C was measured in the state of Sonora, the government also reports. At this time of the year, average temperatures in Mexico vary between 30 and 45 °C. According to the authorities, a new heat wave could hit the country from July 1st.
