Mexico: At least 12 dead in armed attack during party

A drama in the middle of a party. At least twelve people were killed in an armed attack during a party in the city of Salvatierra in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato on Sunday morning, according to local authorities.

“Twelve people have died so far,” said the prosecutor’s office of Guanajuato, one of the most violent states in Mexico due to the presence of powerful criminal gangs, on X (ex-Twitter). Authorities also reported that dozens of injured people were taken to hospitals.

Young victims

According to local media, the murder occurred at the Hacienda San José del Carmen, which is usually rented out for parties. According to the Tierra Negra Foundation, which supports local social projects, the victims were young people who took part in pre-Christmas celebrations.

Similar attacks have occurred in recent years in Guanajuto, which, with 3,029 deaths, ranks among Mexican states with the highest number of murders since the start of the year, according to official figures.

One of the most violent states in Mexico

This district, home to a thriving industrial center, has become the scene of conflict between the Santa Rosa de Lima group and the Jalisco Cartel – New Generation, which is dedicated, among other things, to drug trafficking and fuel theft.

According to official figures, more than 420,000 people have been killed in the country since December 2006, when the federal government launched a controversial military offensive against drug trafficking, most of them victims of criminal activity.
