Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza nearly tied the knot more than a decade ago, and it was all over a big joke.
The Superbad actor told Rolling Stone in an interview published online on Friday that once, while driving through Las Vegas, they “almost spontaneously took a detour and got married.”
Cera said they were looking for something like an Elvis chapel to “get a certificate.” He added, “I think the idea was then we’d divorce right away so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ by about … 20 years of age.”
In 2016, Plaza announced that the two had met after meeting on the set of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. They eventually parted ways after a year and a half, but the actress said on the RuPaul: “What’s the Tee?” podcast that they were still close.
“He’s very special … I mean, we love each other,” she said at the time. “We’re still really good friends. He’s just a weird little freak and we speak the same language. … He’s one of the funniest people I know.”
Even though the wedding didn’t work out, the actor still has nothing but praise for the ‘The White Lotus’ star.
“She’s always been so dedicated to everything she does,” he told the outlet. “It doesn’t surprise me that she’s doing really well. What surprises me is how much she produces and puts projects together. It is wonderful. Ingrid going west? That was so cool.”
In 2021, Plaza married writer-director Jeff Baena, and Cera married Nadine Cera in 2017.
