Over the decades, Michael Giacchino has established himself as one of the greatest musical composers with Lost, the Star Trek reboot films, The Incredibles and more. You’ve heard a lot of his music in recent years, and now you’ll see him take on directorial duties at Marvel.

Giacchino has signed on to direct Marvel’s upcoming (and so far untitled) Halloween special, which currently only features Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly from The Nevers. Very little is known about the special itself, except that it is believed to focus on Werewolf by Night, who often hangs out in the more supernatural corners of the Marvel Universe and first appeared in the Moon Knight comic. (You may have heard of it.) Filming is expected to begin later this month for a one-hour Halloween special, followed by a Guardians of the Galaxy winter holiday special.

Although Giacchino has had a lot of experience writing music for Marvel – he wrote the original Doctor Strange as well as all three MCU Spider-Man films and Thor: Love and Thunder this summer – he has also directed several times. In 2018, he directed, wrote and composed the score for the short film Monster’s Call, and directed the short film for Star Trek the following year. It is currently unknown if Giacchino will also handle the special edition score.

Hiring Giacchino to direct the special is interesting, both because it’s not something that many composers do, and because of the character involved. While most comic book fans may be aware of Jack Russell’s original incarnation in Werewolf by Night, a more modern version of the obscure hero appeared in the 2020 four-part Marvel miniseries Werewolf by Night from writers Tabu and Benjamin Jackendoff and artist Scott Eaton. The new werewolf was a teenager named Jake Gomez who was born with his powers and found he could transform at any time depending on his emotions and used music to keep himself in check. Since the music is a key component of the character and the musician is willing to lead, this may provide some clues as to what to expect from the Halloween special as we begin to learn more about it.
