German Mick Schumacher, son of Michael, who has already been announced as a reserve driver for Mercedes this season, will also be a reserve driver at McLaren, the British Formula 1 team announced on Wednesday.
“McLaren will be able to sign Mick Schumacher as reserve driver for the 2023 F1 season as part of our agreement with Mercedes,” the team wrote in a message posted to Twitter.
The young 23-year-old driver, who was sacked by the Haas team in late 2022 after just two seasons in F1, had also, by mutual consent, parted ways with the Ferrari driver academy that trained him and for which he was reserve pilot in 2022.
He immediately joined Mercedes, the team where his father Michael had retired, as a reserve driver. Mercedes also supplies its engines to the McLaren team.
The 2023 Formula 1 season begins on the weekend of March 5 in Bahrain.
