The Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that it has expanded its recall of Mid America Pet Food’s dog food that may have been contaminated with salmonella.
The recall now includes over 25 types of dog food and six types of cat food.
The affected products came from Mid America’s manufacturing facility in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
The FDA announced in October that Mid America Pet Food recalled three lots of Victor Super Premium Dog Food Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula dry dog food after independent inspectors found the lots were contaminated with salmonella.
This recall is different from the salmonella recall by the same company in September.

How to identify recalled dog food products
The potentially contaminated products are marked with a best-before date of October 31, 2024. Recalled brands manufactured at the Mount Pleasant plant include:
- Victor Super Premium dog food
- Wayne feeds dog food
- Eagle Mountain Pet Food
- some Member’s Mark products
Other dog food brands have been recalled
Blue Ridge Beef recalled packages of its Breeders Choice #2 dog food in October that were found to be contaminated.
TFP Nutrition recalled bags of its Retriever All Life Stages Mini Chunk Chicken Recipe dry dog food earlier this month due to salmonella contamination.
Pet owners are advised to dispose of the recalled products so that they will not be consumed by pets or wildlife and to disinfect any surfaces the products may have come into contact with.
Symptoms and treatment of salmonella disease
Even though people are unlikely to consume the dog food directly, salmonella can still be spread through contact, especially if you do not wash your hands thoroughly after handling contaminated products or surfaces that have come into contact with them. Signs of salmonella poisoning in humans include:
- Bloody diarrhea or diarrhea that lasts more than three days and shows no improvement
- Diarrhea and fever over 102 degrees Fahrenheit
- Excessive vomiting, especially if it prevents you from keeping fluids down
- Signs of dehydration, including dry mouth and throat, infrequent peeing, and feeling dizzy when standing up
- Stomach cramps
These symptoms most commonly occur between six hours and six days after exposure. Although most people recover within four to seven days, people with weakened immune systems, including children under 5 and adults over 65, may experience more serious symptoms that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
Symptoms vary somewhat in infected pets, which, even if they appear healthy, can be carriers and infect other animals or people. For this reason, the FDA recommends that you contact your veterinarian as soon as possible if your dog may have consumed these products, even if he is not showing any signs of illness. Symptoms to look out for in your dog include:
- lethargy
- Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
- Fever
- Vomit
- Decreased appetite
- stomach pain
