The European Union has sharply criticized the deadly attacks on Israel and the “indiscriminate” rocket attacks against the country from Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. “The EU condemns these acts of violence in the strongest possible terms,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in Brussels on Saturday. “This has to stop.”
The European Union called on “all parties” to “maximum containment” “to prevent further escalation and ensure peace for religious holidays”. Currently, believers celebrate the holidays of Ramadan, Easter and Easter at the same time. The security situation is therefore particularly tense.
Israel has the “right of defence”, Borrell stressed, but added that “any response must be proportionate” and the status quo of all holy sites must be preserved.
Two attacks rocked Israel on Friday, killing three and injuring several people. Late on Friday night, an Italian tourist was killed in a car attack on Tel Aviv’s waterfront and seven other tourists were injured. Earlier, two young women of Israeli and British nationality were killed in the West Bank. (apa)
