Hundreds of migrants from various nations, including Cuba, are currently destroying asylum offices in Mexico. Venezuelans, Haitians and Cubans, among many others, have completely overcrowded the premises of the National Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR). Tapachula, in Chiapas, has been the focus of attention regarding the presence of migrants for several months. The goal for most is to cross the country and get to the southern border of the United States. The collapse was mainly seen in the first two days of this week. Entire families arrived in COMAR to obtain pre-registration for political asylum on Aztec soil.
The latest group arrived from Guatemala last weekend and continues their efforts to continue their journey north. The minority said they wanted to stay in Mexico to start a new life in all respects.
Migrants on the edge of the abyss
Many of these migrants left their countries due to the current situation they were suffering there. So they set off on a journey that is, by the way, very dangerous. In the case of Cubans, they usually travel to Nicaragua. Then they make their way along border after border until they reach the southern border of the United States and somehow have access to that country.
Official figures show that more than 224,000 migrants from Cuba arrived in the United States in fiscal year 2022. Such surprising data is unprecedented in the history of migration from the island to the north.
Since last January, measures promoted by President Joe Biden have had some effect. However, those who do not have legal assistance with entry continue to try to cross the southern border.
U.S. immigration authorities also announced they were expelling more than 3,500 Cubans at the southern border. These measures are planned from the beginning of the current financial year.
