“Hudaifa’s mother feels that her two-year-old is getting colder and colder. Eventually, he notices his son’s death and everyone becomes aware of it. In short, this mother with an iron heart washes the child’s body, changes his dirty clothes and opens the bag with new clothes that she would have liked to put on her son when they arrived on the other side of the Mediterranean. After dressing him, she rubs a perfume on him and entrusts him to the sea with her hands ». The one who narrates this harrowing scene, often repeated in the Mediterranean, is a migrant of the group that landed in Pozzallo on September 12 after fifteen days at sea. The chronicle of the day is entrusted to an activist: “In early September – writes Nawal Soufi – the boat arrives from Antalya, Turkey. On board men, women, many children. About 71 miles from Libya, three children are dying of thirst, Haret, three, Hudaifa, two, Motaz, twelve, two women, one man. The others fight back by drinking sea water with toothpaste ». The child’s body is filmed as it is entrusted to the sea, a gesture followed by prayers from the other migrants: “The plane I saw yesterday – the person on board continues – sent us a ship, and this ship threw water at us like we were dogs and couldn’t even get a bottle. Just a boy went into the sea and took a bottle and it was empty immediately, he drank it while he was in the water. Yesterday we were hopeful, today again we are waiting for that plane to pass and see us again ».
