Presidents Joe Biden and Andrés Manuel López Obrador discussed how to reduce migration at the southern border between the United States and Mexico.
Biden has asked the Mexican president for help to curb unprecedented migration, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki confirmed. According to the US government, “they agreed to increase cooperation to support fair, humane and effective efforts to reduce irregular migration”.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the visit of his Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrand to Washington. The meeting is being held to “advance cooperation issues for development and the Americas Summit,” Telesur says. Obrador described the virtual exchange with the US President as cordial.
Joe Biden considered the need to apply stricter immigration measures. The meeting took place behind closed doors without the presence of the press.
The United States is conducting a process to remove Title 42 from legislation approved by former President Donald Trump. The measure allows immigrants to be deported at the border without giving them time to apply for asylum.
More than 220,000 people were intercepted by US Customs and Border Protection. For its part, the National Migration Institute of Mexico announced the rescue of more than 5,000 people. The emigrants come from countries like Honduras, Guatemala, Cuba, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
