As the Prime Minister's office announced after the meeting, discussions focused on joint work on migration. The two heads of government agreed to co-finance a first Italian-British project to support the voluntary return to migrants' countries of origin.
“A solid friendship”
The agreement was drawn up by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for migrants stranded in Tunisia. “We have a very solid and strong friendship with Meloni, which is currently being strengthened again. We are both conservatives, we support NATO and we are against Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Sunak said, according to media sources.
“This is no longer acceptable”
The irregular arrival of migrants and refugees in Lampedusa is unsustainable and immoral, Sunak said on Saturday. “Our opponents want to bury their heads in the sand and think the problem will solve itself, but that’s not how it works,” Sunak continued. “Look at Lampedusa, where 50 percent of immigrants arrived this year: this is no longer sustainable, it is not right and it is immoral,” he added.
Meloni, who also met with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, reiterated the importance of achieving a final stabilization of the Western Balkans, also based on recent measures taken within the framework of the EU enlargement process.
