Ashton recently announced that he nearly died from a rare condition called vasculitis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and narrows blood vessels.

The No Strings Attached star said the illness had “destroyed my sight, my hearing and my whole balance”.

“It took me about a year to rebuild everything,” he said on an upcoming episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge.

According to Kutcher, his harrowing experience with vasculitis, while scary, gave him a newfound appreciation for his health and senses, explaining that he never really realized how important they were until he lost them.

Whoa! Ashton says in an upcoming episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge that the disease “has knocked out my vision, my hearing and my entire balance.”

“You don’t really appreciate it until it’s gone,” the human rights activist admitted.

“Until you go I don’t know if I’ll ever see again, I don’t know if I’ll ever hear again, I don’t know if I’ll ever walk again.”

He added that he is “lucky to be alive.”

The actor revealed it took him a year to build his strength, leading Grylls to praise his “strength through adversity”.

The father of two said he sees challenges as opportunities for growth.

“The moment you start seeing your obstacles as things made for you, to give you what you need, life starts to be fun, right? You start surfing on your problems instead of living among them,” he said.

On Monday night, he took to Twitter to share his current condition before revealing he will be running the New York City Marathon in November 2022.

“Before there’s a bunch of rumor/chatter/whatever out there. Yes, I had a rare episode of vasculitis 3 years ago. (Autoimmune flair) I had some hearing impairments, vision problems, balance problems right after. I have fully recovered. It’s all ok. Let’s move on,” he wrote.

The episode, starring Ashton, airs Monday night on National Geographic.

What is middle vessel vasculitis?

Vasculitis is the name given to a group of disorders in which blood vessels, such as arteries and veins, become inflamed or swollen.

Inflammation is the body’s natural immune response and helps the body fight off infection.

However, in people with vasculitis, healthy blood vessels swell, which narrows them and can increase blood pressure or decrease the amount of blood that can be pumped through the vessel.

Medium-vessel vasculitis specifically affects medium-sized blood vessels, such as arteries and veins, that supply blood to muscles.

Vasculitis can range from a minor problem affecting just small blood vessels in the skin to a more serious condition causing problems with organs such as the heart or kidneys.

The cause is often unclear, but may be due to an infection or medication.

Symptoms can include skin rashes, tiredness, weakness, fever, abdominal pain, and kidney or nerve problems.

Vasculitis is rare: about 14,000 new cases are diagnosed in the UK each year, and it affects about 97,000 Americans.
