In the document, the libertarian says that his foreign policy differs “in many aspects” from that of former President Alberto Fernández, who negotiated the integration of Argentina into the economic group from January 1, 2024. “In this sense, some decisions were made by the predecessor.” Management is being reviewed.”

Argentina's admission to the Brics group was announced during the summit on August 24, 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition to the South American country, five other accessions have been formalized: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.

However, Milei had already stated in August 2023 that she was against membership. In a speech that same month, during the campaign, the libertarian said he would not “ally with the communists” but rather with the United States and Israel.

Here is the full letter Milei sent to Lula:

“Mister President:

“I am pleased to contact you regarding the invitation to the Argentine Republic to join the BRICS group decided at the Johannesburg Summit last August.

“As you know, the foreign policy of the government that I headed a few days ago differs in many aspects from that of the previous government. In this sense, some decisions of the previous management are being reviewed. This includes the creation of a special unit for the country's active participation in the Brics states, as announced by former President Alberto Fernández in a letter dated September 4th.

“In this context, I would like to inform you that the incorporation of the Argentine Republic into the BRICS as a full member from January 1, 2024 is not considered appropriate at this time.

“Without prejudice, I would like to highlight my government's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with your country, particularly by increasing trade and investment flows.

“As I wait to meet with you, I take this opportunity to express my highest respect.

“To the Honorable President of the Federative Republic of Brazil,

“Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva”.
