Millions of people in parts of North, South and Central America today saw a rare fiery corona solar eclipse. Equipped with special protective glasses, they gathered in various places to watch the natural spectacle together.
During a corona flare solar eclipse, also known as an annular solar eclipse, the moon moves in front of the sun, but its outer edge remains visible.
Play over Panama for longer
According to the US Space Agency (NASA), the solar eclipse was most pronounced over parts of the US states of Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, as well as parts of Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica. and Panama, Colombia and Brazil.
Visibility of the annular solar eclipse moved in a narrow band from northwest to southeast across the American continent. The maximum annular phase duration of five minutes and 17 seconds was reached in Panama.
Partial phases of darkness could be seen over large areas of the US, although rain clouds prevented the celestial spectacle from being seen in parts of the US east coast, for example. The phenomenon has not been observed in Europe. A total solar eclipse has been announced again for parts of North America in April 2024.
