The Paris Agreement has set the target of limiting the increase in global average temperature to 1.5 degrees, scientific evidence has shown that this cannot be achieved without protecting nature, which is why between December 7th and 19th the COP15, the United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity, taking place in montreal canada, under Chinese presidency. This meeting seeks to address the biodiversity loss crisis with meetings between different countries.

Environment Minister Maisa Rojas, participated in the high level segment (High Level Segment), a space that brings together authorities such as ministers and heads of delegations to present countries’ positions on the challenges of this summit.

On this occasion, the Foreign Minister expressed that “our ecosystems and our biodiversity are the livelihood of all people and are essential for sustainable development”. He added that Chile’s obligation is “to protect them in order to contribute to the world and to take all possible measures to prevent their deterioration in view of the development of economic activity”.

The main objective of the meeting is Adoption of the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, which contains an action plan with various objectives aimed at achieving an improvement in the relationship between man and nature. To this end, the leader will hold bilateral meetings with representatives of Colombia, Argentina, France, the European Union and Canada.

In addition, the minister stated that the world is facing a triple environmental crisis: iclimate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and that these crises are interrelated and need to be addressed synergistically and systemically.

Another goal of COP15 is Achieve a global deal to protect 30% of the planet by 2030. Chile is a member of the steering committee of the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People, which reaffirms the country’s political commitment to the conservation and protection of land and sea.

The country has been recognized worldwide for preserving its biodiversity in terms of areas to be preserved because approximately 22% of the country’s area is protected and 42% of the exclusive economic zone (ZEE) has some form of protection.
