Minnesota Vikings hire Demitrius Washington as vice president of football operations

EAGAN, Minn. — The Minnesota Vikings continued their shift toward an analysis-driven front office Monday, hiring Demitrius Washington for the newly created position of vice president of football operations.

Washington spent seven seasons in research and development at the San Francisco 49ers, five of which he spent with current Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. He holds a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance and analytics from the University of Missouri.

During the 2020-21 season, he was tasked with improving the 49ers’ optimization and process, developing statistical analysis for player evaluation, acquisition and strategy.

“[Washington] is one of the most unique people I’ve met in my time in the NFL,” Adofo-Mensah said in a statement. “He is able to learn complex ideas, make them simple and apply them in all facets of the organization. He’s learned from some of the best minds in today’s game and will continue to thrive in his role at Vikings.”

Adofo-Mensah, who has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics, started his career as a commodity trader before joining the 49ers in 2013. During the 2022 NFL draft, he made six top-level trades, including two with division opponents, an early sign of the analysis process he’s implementing in Minnesota.
