Miss France with short hair causes heated debates

Mathematics student Eve Gilles, 20, was crowned the new Miss France on Saturday. It was the first time that a French woman with short hair won this title. Since then, the discussion about her, her body and especially her “pixie cut”, in which the hair reaches just above the ears, has not abated.

On social media, Gilles' hairstyle is seen as an awakening statement. It was criticized that a woman with short hair could win the award. In making the decision, the jury ignored the public vote, which represented 50 percent of the decision. The public supported two other candidates.

“French beauty is never just a question of looks”

However, Gilles also has several supporters on his side. French journalist Agnes Poirier said in the Guardian that “French beauty has never been just a matter of appearance, but also of spirit” and that this is where its universal appeal comes from.

Some deputies, such as leftist Fabien Roussel, also supported Gilles. She suffers the violence of a society “that does not accept women defining themselves in all their diversity”.

Gilles himself commented on Instagram. She expected criticism about her hairstyle and was ready. “But I didn’t expect to receive criticism of my body.” You don't choose your body, you can adjust your hairstyle.
