Local media reported that at least six people were injured in the incident, which is believed to be related to the ongoing Gaza war.
At least six people were injured after a rocket hit the Egyptian resort of Taba near the Israeli border, according to local media reports.
The rocket hit an ambulance facility and a residential building of the administration of Taba Hospital on Friday morning, Egyptian news agency Al Qahera News reported, citing local sources.
A witness in Taba confirmed he heard an explosion and saw smoke rising, Portal reported, but the news agency could not immediately identify the source of the explosion.
The incident is believed to be related to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, which has been raging in Gaza since October 7, when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel, killing at least 1,405 people.
Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have since killed at least 7,028 Palestinians.
Taba is about 220 km (135 miles) from the Gaza Strip and lies on the Egyptian border with the Israeli Red Sea port of Eilat. The Israeli military said it was aware of a security incident outside its borders.
Hamas, which rules Gaza, said on Wednesday it had attacked Eilat with a rocket that the Israeli military said hit a remote area. This incident appeared to be the largest-reaching Palestinian attack of the Gaza war.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility after the explosion on Friday morning. Al-Qahera reported that an investigation has been launched.
Taba on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula is popular with tourists. It is about a three-hour drive from the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
The explosion in Taba highlights the risks facing Egypt and other countries in the region as fighting between Israel and Hamas intensifies.
Egypt has taken an active role in negotiating Palestinian access to aid, pushing for the release of hostages held by Hamas and pushing for a ceasefire. But his proximity to the front carries risks.
On October 22, several Egyptian border guards were injured after being accidentally hit by shrapnel from an Israeli tank. Israel apologized for the incident.
Other countries in the region, including Lebanon and Syria, have also been peripherally involved in the fighting.
Iran supports both Hamas and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, which Israel has clashed with in fighting along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
On Thursday, the United States said it had struck two Iran-linked facilities in Syria, following a series of attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria.
Last week, the US military said a Navy warship in the northern Red Sea intercepted projectiles fired by the Houthi armed group in Yemen, possibly aimed at Israel.
