A French postman who would have thrown a hundred letters in a ditch or on the edge of a rubbish bin rather than handing them out would have been dismissed from his post and now risked three years in prison for his offence.
“It can only be mail left by the postman, as it is mail intended for the residents of the village […] “The town clerk had many complaints from local residents who were to receive mail,” said Moncel-sur-Seille mayor Alain Chané, as reported by France Bleu Sud Lorraine on Tuesday.
The mayor first became aware of the problem on August 14 when a local resident reported a stack of letters left near a garbage can.
Just two days later, around fifty letters were found in Sornéville, just a few kilometers away, and in Erbéviller-sur-Amezule – this time thrown into a ditch.
The postal service was able to locate the postman in question, who, according to French media, would have been dismissed from his post as soon as possible.
La Poste also filed a formal complaint against the former employee, who France Bleu Sud Lorraine says could theoretically face three years in prison and a €45,000 fine for his gesture.
The recovered mail should be redistributed with a letter of apology.
