“Mission: Impossible – Death Toll Part One”: Spectacular Tom Cruise!

Tom Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff to name a few deliver a highly satisfying show of stunts and action.

Mission: Impossible – Death toll Part One, like all previous films in this $3.5 billion franchise, is made for the big screen…ideally an IMAX screen to show the incredible stunts, breathtaking scenery and thrilling action in to be able to enjoy to the fullest.

Hyperpolated – more so than the previous parts -, without any technical defect – a miracle given the length of 163 minutes – and with humor and self-mockery that – for the first time in the franchise – are welcome, Mission: Impossible – Tod Toll, part one features Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as he goes in search of keys to activate (and thus deactivate) an artificial intelligence that villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) wants to control. So much for the framework of the narrative, which is full of additional details, nods to the original series and new characters.

Yes, certainly with the same joy we find Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), the white widow (Vanessa Kirby), Paris (Pom Klementieff) and we meet again with pleasure Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny, reprising his role from the 1996 first feature film) as the head of the IMF, the famed Impossible Mission Force without which nothing would have been possible since the 1966 television series.

Renovation…

After 57 years of existence and six feature films starring Tom Cruise, one would think that all is said, done, filmed. It is not so. Director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie, along with Erik Jendresen for the screenplay and Tom Cruise for everything, manage to bring modernity, freshness and surprises to a concept that could easily be worn out and therefore boring (think of the endless franchises of superheroes, monsters , other secret agents or modern day Robin Hoods). The arrival of Hayley Atwell as Grace, a high-flying burglar (yes, pun intended!), clears things up; The Abu Dhabi airport scene and the Fiat chase through the streets of Rome wouldn’t be as effective without her, and she seems to enjoy this game of cat and mouse as much as Tom Cruise.

The sheer scale of the stunts can’t leave the most jaded moviegoer indifferent – yes, let’s mention the parachute jump from a motorcycle that’s been doing the internet rounds, but there are so many others, just as rhythmic and breathtaking. Meticulously choreographed, perfectly executed and brilliantly voiced by Lorne Balfe – you’ll notice the fights punctuated by the notes of the iconic theme – they invariably live up to expectations – we also notice the scene in the sandstorm, concept privy to Ghost Protocol, in my opinion after the best of the series.

Undoubtedly, “Mission: Impossible – Death Toll Part One” is a spectacle in a class of its own. A large scale show that we appreciate as it should on the IMAX screen.

Mission: Impossible – Death great, part 1 will delight fans from July 12th.
