MLS: Galaxy has exceeded the salary cap

Major League Soccer (MLS) announced Friday that the Los Angeles Galaxy flouted the league’s budget rules in 2019.

In a statement, the Garber Circuit said forward Cristian Pavon’s salary had not been properly disclosed. He had fallen into the category of athletes acquired through a targeted allotment sum when he should have been a designated player.

The MLS therefore fined the club $1 million and a loss of the same magnitude equal to general compensation. The Galaxy will also not be able to recruit a player who requires an international transfer certificate and is therefore playing outside of the United States or Canada during the second transfer window of 2023 (July-August).

Meanwhile, the team’s president, Chris Klein, is suspended from his sporting duties until early May, the end of the first transfer window. Head coach Greg Vanney will assume his role as athletic director for the first half of 2023.

Pavon played for Galaxy in 2019 and 2020. He played 33 games in MLS and collected 13 goals and 15 assists. His loan from Argentine club Boca Juniors expired on December 31, 2020.
