A mother who postponed decorating for the holiday after her husband was diagnosed with cancer was moved to tears by the Christmas tree her young sons decorated themselves.

Sheena Schuber, 38, of Tinley Park, Illinois, opened up about the heartwarming moment in an interview with Today, saying her husband Nick Schuber, 35, was diagnosed with stage four cancer on November 5.

The mum explained that her family “usually gives everything at Christmas” and Nick even dresses up as Santa, but she “wasn’t feeling like it this holiday season”.

That’s when her sons AJ, seven, and Michael, three, decided to take over.

“The kids asked me every day,” she said of hanging up her Christmas decorations.

Sheena admitted she used to be “a little crazy” about her decorations, but decided to let them do their own thing this year.

AJ and Michael set about hanging elven ornaments from the front of the tree, although they skipped the back and weren’t big enough to decorate the top.

The end result wasn’t perfect, but her efforts meant the world to her parents, who were touched by the gesture.

“We cried when we saw it and were like, ‘Wow, the kids are handling this a lot better than we are,'” Sheena told Today.

The Schuber family have a difficult year ahead of them, but Nick’s diagnosis has given them a new perspective this Christmas.

“When we ask the kids what they want for Christmas, they just say they just want ‘Jesus fix dad,'” the mother shared.
