Mônica Bergamo: “Long live democracy,” says Chico Buarque in concert after the coup invasion in Brasilia

Singer Chico Buarque praised democracy at the opening of his concert at the Vivo Rio, in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, this Sunday (8).

As he took the stage, he said, “I’m just a singer. But I can’t help but say: long live democracy.”

The speech comes after coup protesters raided the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the STF (Supreme Court) and spread vandalism in Brasília throughout Sunday.

Alongside singer Mônica Salmaso, Chico is presenting his current tour “Que Tal um Samba?”, which has been touring the country since last year.

The action by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) supporters this Sunday came a week after Lula’s (PT) inauguration, which was preceded by antidemocracy acts inflated by the former president’s coup rhetoric during the legislature.

In a statement, the President of the Republic said that all coup plotters who broke into and destroyed the headquarters of the Three Powers will be found and punished.

The Petista said they were real vandals and announced federal intervention in the federal district’s security perimeter by the end of January.
