Holder Djukanovic likely to run into second round ©APA/AFP
Montenegro will elect a new president this Sunday. There are seven candidates in the race, including current head of state Milo Djukanovic. According to forecasts, the holder cannot count on winning the election in the first round this time, as was the case five years ago. However, it is assumed that Djukanovic will enter the second round on April 2.
However, who his opponent will be then does not seem so clear: the best prospects are given to three candidates from the pro-Serb parties, which have been in power since 2020. They are the leader of the Democratic Front Andrija Mandic, the former minister of Finance Jakov Milatovic of the Europe Now movement and Democrat leader Aleksa Becic.
Around 542,000 citizens of Montenegro are entitled to vote, almost a third of whom live in the capital Podgorica. Polling stations are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.
