The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) was alerted at around 3:45 a.m. to a fire at a store on Rue Bernard Ouest, near Avenue de l’Esplanade.
When police arrived on scene, firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department were already on scene trying to bring the flames under control.
Residents on the 2nd and 3rd floors were evacuated particularly due to the smoke, but no one was injured, said SPVM spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant.
According to witnesses interviewed by the SPVM, at least one suspect was seen throwing an incendiary object before the fire broke out and then fleeing.
The investigation of this fire, which caused significant damage to the facility, has been assigned to the SPVM’s Arson Unit.
Investigators were expected to travel to the scene later Monday morning to analyze the scene and attempt to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire, it said.
