A Montreal church in Ville-Marie was hit by an electrical fire on Saturday night.
The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) received emergency calls around 2:30 a.m. about a fire alarm at a church on Rue Saint-Sulpice, near Rue Notre-Dame Ouest.
When police arrived on scene, firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) were already trying to bring the rapidly falling flames under control.
According to initial information, the fire was caused by an electrical problem that caused part of the scaffolding at the building's construction site to burst into flames.
At least this was confirmed by SPVM spokeswoman Caroline Chèvrefils on Sunday morning and pointed out that there was no damage to the building.
At the end of the morning, the leadership of the Notre-Dame Basilica emphasized that the event would have no impact on the activities planned for Christmas Eve.
“The small fire that broke out on December 24th outside the Notre-Dame Basilica, on the site of the tower restoration, was of electrical origin. They have not caused any significant damage and religious activities and celebrations will take place as planned,” said a press release.
