An old building in downtown Montreal burst into flames on Friday night, requiring the deployment of more than 80 firefighters.
The Montreal Fire Department (SIM) received a call around midnight about a fire that reportedly broke out in a two-story residential building – built more than 100 years ago – on the corner of Tupper and Saint streets. -Matthew.
One of the three accommodations in the building was occupied when the fire broke out, but no one was injured, according to SIM spokeswoman Émilie Barbeau-Charlebois.
The fire apparently started in the rear of the building, but firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control around 4 a.m. this morning. The extent of the flames required the activation of three SIM alarms on a scale of five, mobilizing more than 80 firefighters to the scene.
“It is still too early to determine the cause of the fire,” Ms. Barbeau-Charlebois said. There is currently nothing to indicate that it was arson. The file is still in the hands of firefighters who will try to determine the exact cause and origin of the flames.
“It is very important, and will be even more important during the holiday season, to ensure we have working smoke alarms,” the spokesperson added, inviting the public to visit the SIM website to learn more about home safety measures.
