Montreal: Police officers shot during attempted vehicle theft –

A police patrol car was the target of gunfire from suspects who had just been caught stealing a vehicle on the Plateau-Mont-Royal in Montreal on Tuesday night.

Patrol officers from the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) surprised people trying to steal a vehicle on Avenue du Parc near Rue Bernard Ouest around 1:30 a.m.

However, when they saw the police, some of the suspects fled towards a vehicle that was waiting for them not far from the crime scene, said SPVM spokeswoman Sabrina Gauthier.

In a panic, the vehicle collided with the patrol car before fleeing north on Avenue du Parc.

The other suspects then walked toward a second vehicle and fired shots at police before speeding away south on Avenue du Parc.

No one was injured in the shooting and no suspects were arrested, but the two suspect vehicles are the subject of intensive searches.

A command post was established at the scene while the canine unit was mobilized to assist in the search.

Avenue du Parc is closed in both directions between Rue Bernard Ouest and Rue Saint-Viateur Ouest, it said.
