If some had done it'While they hope for a white Christmas, their dream threatens to fail in the coming hours, while Montreal could break a rainfall record as well as a heat record.
Environment Canada is forecasting 15 to 25 mm of water in the city overnight Sunday into Monday. The rainfall record is 21.6 mm on December 18th. As for the heat, the temperature could reach 9 degrees overnight, breaking the previous mark of 5.7 degrees. These two records are both from 1941 and 2012.
“The frozen ground has a reduced capacity to absorb this amount of rain,” Environment Canada recalled in its warning. Between 40 and 70 millimeters of rain are forecast [dimanche soir] and Monday evening.”
“The mild temperatures will cause the snowpack to melt, contributing more to runoff and raising levels in certain rivers,” Environment Canada added. Clouds of fog could accompany the rain. Flooding may occur in places in the lowlands.”
In an interview with LCN, meteorologist Gilles Brien predicted a more colorful Christmas than usual.
“We will see all colors! Certainly not white, but green, brown, all shades will pass,” he said.
Environment Canada does not expect further snowfall until the holidays.
Multiple locations in Quebec
Montreal is far from the only place that is in danger of saying goodbye to its previous records in the coming hours.
With forecasts of between 6 and 7 degrees in Sept-Îles, a record from 1976 could be broken. Rainfall of up to 100 millimeters of rain could also dash hopes of a white Christmas in the old capital and eastern Quebec. Much of Beauce, Haute-Côte-Nord and Baie-des-Chaleurs are also subject to Environment Canada warnings.
Meteorologist Amélie Bertrand explained that the “extraordinary” phenomenon came from Florida.
