Monument to 200 years of the beginning of diplomacy in Costa Rica unveiled

San José, November 7 (Prensa Latina) A plaque commemorating the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the practice of diplomacy in Costa Rica was unveiled today here at the Manuel María de Peralta Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Divine Services.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that the event took place last May.

When the new Supreme Councilor appointed Mariano Montealegre to negotiate with the governments of León and Granada in Nicaragua, the exercise of diplomacy in Costa Rica began.

Before the unveiling, Foreign Minister Arnoldo André emphasized that Costa Rican diplomacy would not have come this far without the dedication and commitment of women and men who have served with mysticism and dedication as ambassadors, consuls and officials around the world.

The event was attended by Carmen Claramunt, director of the academy; and Jorge Umaña, President of the Costa Rican Association of Career Diplomats, the organization that motivated the installation of the plaque, which also pays tribute to the 35th anniversary of this institution founded in 1988.

In this regard, Minister André noted that the Academy has shaped generations of diplomats, providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the complex world of international relations.

Speaking about the honor, Ambassador Claramunt emphasized that the work of diplomatic officials must always be imbued with a positive spirit that allows progress in the tasks assigned to them.

Currently, Costa Rica’s diplomatic career includes 192 officials who carry out their duties in the internal service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in San José; and in the country’s 55 foreign missions, including 43 bilateral embassies, 40 consular offices, nine decentralized consulates and three multilateral missions.
