More cases of Covid-19 in the US reflect the ongoing threat from the virus

Washington, April 10 (Prensa Latina) An explosion of Covid-19 cases in this capital today, including high-profile figures, reflects the ongoing threat of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the United States.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and a host of lawmakers have all tested positive in recent days.

According to experts, the number of infected people in the country will increase in the coming weeks because an even more transmissible subvariant of Omicron, known as BA.2, is already widespread on the national territory.

Cities like Washington and New York have seen an upward trend in the number of infected people over the past few days.

Jennifer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at Brown University quoted by The Hill newspaper, believed that despite the increase in cases, there is now much more immunity to both vaccines and previous infections, so there must be fewer seriously ill patients.

Anthony Fauci, the government’s top epidemiological adviser, said on Bloomberg TV this week that he hopes higher levels of immunity in the population will help mitigate the worst of an impending spike in cases.

The White House on Friday acknowledged that President Joe Biden could contract the virus but stressed the protections he has from vaccinations and booster shots.

Although there is a risk of a rebound, the current situation is more favorable than in previous months, according to the New York Times, despite the fact that around 500 people are dying every day from the virus, mostly unvaccinated.

The United States has had the worst numbers in the world since the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic in March 2020 and more than 984,000 people have since lost their lives as a result.
