Beginning in May, Southwest Airlines will triple flights between the United States and Cuba. This is according to a statement from the airline.
Southwest currently connects Fort Lauderdale Airport in Florida with José Martí International Airport in Havana on a daily basis. However, with the new decision, the route connecting both cities will have three daily flights from May 4th. The dates will be announced in the coming days.
In the month of May there is also an additional return flight every Saturday. Previously there was only one frequency between Tampa, Florida and Havana. This is intended to supplement the round trip offer.
Tickets to Havana with Southwest Airlines cost around $800.00 if you want to book a round trip. Tickets can be booked on the airline’s website.
Increasing frequency of flights, but only to Havana
Since December 5, this airline has resumed its weekly flights to the Cuban capital. From February 17 of this year, they were increased to a daily trip. Southwest is also the second airline to fly to Havana from Fort Lauderdale north of Miami. The first is JetBlue.
Following the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, connectivity between the United States has been partially restored. Other restrictions imposed by Donald Trump’s administration remain in place. These restrict flights only to Havana and not to various cities in the country, as has been the case for years.
This creates inconveniences for Cubans visiting their families in the Antilles nation. In many cases they have to travel great distances to reach their provinces of origin.
