Environment Canada confirms that more than 135 millimeters have fallen in certain areas of Charlevoix since the start of the weekend.

Torrential rain caused several rivers to burst from their beds, particularly in Saint-Urbain, where the Gouffre River suffered “major flooding”.

The Genévrier campsite near the Mares river in Baie-Saint-Paul was not spared. A section that was closed due to flooding last spring is currently inundated.

Some people were evacuated as a precaution, but there were no injuries, authorities said.

Route 170 closed

The section of Route 170 connecting L’Anse-Saint-Jean to Sagard is closed to traffic between kilometers 22 and 68, according to Quebec 511.

Many homes along Route 170 had to be evacuated while other citizens worked to clean up the damage.

“I have a meter of water in my basement,” said Roch Tremblay, a Sagard resident discouraged by the bad weather. “It happened all of a sudden, I imagine it was the “Calvette” that got blocked

Although his land is near a stream, the man explains that the situation is exceptional.

“We already had a little water on the land in 2011, but that’s a lot,” he explains.

Watchful foot

Several municipalities in Charlevoix-Est and Bas-Saguenay remain on alert. “The firefighters are ready. We are monitoring the situation closely,” says Sylvain Tremblay, mayor of Saint-Siméon.

As a preventive measure, the mayor also provided the citizens with an accommodation facility.
