More power and autonomy

If the 2024 model year at Polestar is marked above all by the launch of a first SUV, the Polestar 3, we must not forget the Polestar 2 sedan.

After the major software update late last year (which helped it surpass the milestone of 100,000 units sold worldwide since its launch in 2019), the rival Tesla Model 3 is getting more changes that make it more attractive and efficient.

On the design side, like the Polestar 3, it adopts a closed grille called “SmartZone” (which houses, among other things, the front camera and the mid-range radar), while its 20-inch rims from the Performance Pack have been redesigned, incorporating those of its new big one brother imitates. The standard 19-inch wheels can now be shod with Michelin all-season tires.

New engines and drive

The Polestar 2 2024 is also equipped with new electric motors and inverters. The base model’s is now installed in the rear for rear-wheel drive instead of traction. Its power has been increased from 170 to 220 kilowatts (228 to 295 hp) and its torque from 243 to 361 lb-ft. These major improvements cut the 0-100 km/h acceleration time from 7.4 to 6.2 seconds. Expect completely different driving dynamics, too.

For the twin-engine Polestar 2, the drive configuration and torque distribution have been significantly revised. The new rear engine now acts as the main power source and is combined with a new asynchronous front engine. Together they produce 310 kilowatts (416 hp) and 546 pound-feet of torque, compared to 300 kilowatts (402 hp) and 487 pound-feet. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes 4.8 to 4.5 seconds. Detail to be highlighted: the front engine can be completely decoupled when its contribution is not needed, all with the aim of improving the vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

Oddly enough, Polestar announces that the optional Performance Pack increases power to 335 kilowatts (449 hp), up from 350 kilowatts (469 hp). Either way, if you’re really in a hurry, this Polestar 2 will get you to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds.

Longer battery life and faster charging

At the same time, the Polestar 2 2024 benefits from an increased range. First of all, the single-motor version gets a larger 82-kWh battery, which, according to estimates based on the EPA calculation method in the USA, can be used for up to 483 kilometers. The exact figure is yet to be confirmed, but it’s a significant increase compared to the current 435 kilometers. In addition, up to 205 kilowatts can now be charged quickly.

With the twin-engine variant, the fact that its front engine can decouple in certain situations helps increase the range from 418 to 435 kilometers. Its battery capacity remains at 78 kWh and fast charging continues up to a maximum of 155 kilowatts.

Its equipment has been revised so that the Driver’s Package (with several driving aids) is included as standard and the Plus Package is automatically added to the Performance Package. Remember, the latter includes Brembo brakes, exclusive 20-inch rims, Ohlins shock absorbers, a Polestar Engineered software update and gold-yellow seat belts.

Pricing for the 2024 Polestar 2 will be announced later this year, just before it goes on sale.
