More than 100 killed in boat accident in Nigeria

More than 200 passengers would be on the boat.

More than 100 people died in a boat accident on a river in Nigeria. The boat sank while bringing families back from a wedding in Kwara state, police and local officials said on Tuesday. A police spokesman told AFP about 103 dead and 100 survivors in the crash.

Several eyewitnesses also reported many deaths. Umar Bologi, a traditional leader of the region’s Nupe people, told the BBC on Tuesday that at least 150 people were believed to have died in the tragedy.

Initially nothing was known about the reason for the accident. However, similar ship accidents with many fatalities are not uncommon in Nigeria. The reason is often overloaded and poorly maintained ships. The Niger is the longest river in Nigeria and the third longest river in Africa. (APA/dpa/AFP)
