More than 17 percent of the population in Guatemala suffers from diabetes

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) stated in one of its reports that the Santa Rosa central authority diagnosed more cases, the rate of which exceeds three thousand per 100,000 people.

Figures from the continent's health agency suggest the disease is the third cause of overall mortality in the country.

Statistics from the Guatemalan Institute of Social Security show the care of 132,378 diabetics in 2022.

Around the world, someone dies every six seconds as a result of high blood sugar levels, which uncontrolled lead to blindness, heart attacks, strokes and lower limb amputations.

Diabetics have high blood pressure, which can also damage the kidneys, and they also have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and tuberculosis.

Recommendations for preventing diabetes include a healthy diet with salads and vegetables, moderate consumption of legumes, grains and nuts, regular physical activity, maintaining a sufficient weight and avoiding tobacco use.

Local experts emphasize that self-care is a powerful tool in the fight against this disease and kidney disease.
