More than 2 million baby swings and bouncers recalled after death of 10-month-old baby

More than 2 million MamaRoo swings and RockaRoo swings are being recalled following the strangulation death of a 10-month-old child, which narrowly involved another child, Thorley Industries and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Monday.

The recall affects 2 million MamaRoo swings and 220,000 RockaRoo swings sold by Thorley’s 4moms line at BuyBuy Baby and Target stores nationwide, as well as online at 4moms.com and Amazon. The swings and seesaws sold for between $160 and $250 from January 2010 to August 2022, according to the CPSC’s release.

Another 60,000 MamaRoo swings and 10,000 RockaRoo swings were sold in Canada, the agency and the Pennsylvania-based company said.

4moms has received two reports of infants becoming entangled in the harness under an unoccupied MamaRoo baby swing after crawling under the product’s seat. A 10-month-old baby died of suffocation and another 10-month-old suffered bruises on his neck before being rescued by a caregiver, they said.

The recall affects MamaRoo models with a three-point belt: versions 1.0 and 2.0 (model number 4M-005), version 3.0 (model number 1026) and version 4.0 (model number 1037). The recalled RockaRoo seesaw has the model number 4M-012, which can be found on the bottom.

Families with toddlers who can crawl should stop using the recalled swings and seesaws and place them where babies can’t reach. Those with the recalled products can register for a free strap lock to prevent the straps from stretching under the swing when not in use.

Thorley Industries can be reached toll-free at (877) 870-7390 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, by email at [email protected], or online at https://www.4momsrecall.expertinquiry.com or https ://www.4moms.com.

Rocker Safety Alert

Monday’s recall comes two months after the CPSC warned Americans against using baby bouncers to sleep, citing at least 14 deaths linked to Fisher-Price products and another from Kids2.

Parents and caregivers should never use tilted products — including rockers, glides, pacifiers and swings — for infant sleep, and shouldn’t leave babies unattended or with bedding in the products due to the risk of suffocation, the agency and companies said.

President Biden signed the Baby Safe Sleep Act in May, banning the manufacture or sale of padded crib bumper pads and prone sleep products linked to hundreds of deaths.
