In Peru, more than 3,400 women were reported missing from January to April this year. As the responsible ombudsman announced in a report on Saturday, only 1,902 of the 3,406 missing persons have been found so far. Thus, 1,504 women would continue to be sought. The state is not taking any measures to prevent this, said Isabel Ortiz, from the ombudsman.
The problem of enforced disappearance, mainly by kidnapping and abduction, is not given higher priority.
In 2022, more than 5,380 women were reported missing in Peru, mostly girls and teenagers. According to feminist organizations, in many cases the police and public prosecutors do not investigate enough because they assume that the women will voluntarily leave.
