An earthquake in northwest Iran killed at least three people and injured hundreds more. The 5.9 magnitude tremor shook the city of Choi at 21:44 (19:14 CET) last night, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.

The governor of the province of West Azerbaijan, on the border with Turkey, Mohammed Sadegh Motamedian, spoke of three dead and 816 wounded. According to IRNA, Interior Minister Ahmad Wahidi traveled to Choi to get an idea of the situation and coordinate aid.

Several tectonic plates collide in Iran. Earthquakes are therefore common in the region. On January 18, hundreds of people were injured in an earthquake near Choi. In February 2020, an earthquake in the village of Habash-e Olya in western Iran killed at least nine people.
