More than a thousand children lost their legs to Israeli bombs in Gaza

Ramallah, January 8 (Prensa Latina) More than a thousand Palestinian children have lost one or both legs in the Gaza Strip since October 7 due to Israeli bombing, Save the Children reported today.

Many of these amputations were carried out under difficult conditions because the health system there was paralyzed by the conflict and there was a severe shortage of doctors and nurses as well as medical supplies, including anesthetics and antibiotics, the non-governmental organization warned in a statement.

“I have seen doctors completely overwhelmed when minors arrive with blast injuries,” said Jason Lee, Save the Children’s director for the occupied Palestinian territories.

“The impact of seeing children with such extensive damage and not having the equipment and medication to treat them or manage the pain is too great even for experienced professionals,” he said.

Lee warned that infants affected by explosions were particularly vulnerable to serious injuries that would change their lives forever.

“They have weaker necks and torsos, so less force is needed to cause a brain injury, their skulls are not fully formed, and their undeveloped muscles provide less protection, so an explosion is more likely to rupture organs.” there is no visible damage,” he noted.

The suffering of children in this conflict is unimaginable and all the more so because it is unnecessary and entirely avoidable, he said.

The activist warned that this pain, killings and mutilations were serious violations and called for the Israeli authorities to be put in the dock.

If the world does not take action to fulfill its responsibilities under international humanitarian law and prevent the most serious crimes of international concern, history will judge us all, he said.
