“Without supplemental oxygen, even the descent is more difficult”
Giampaolo Corona “is an experienced mountaineer and, like me, also a mountain guide, so also a qualified and certified professional who knows his stuff”. This is how ANSA reports the Bergamo mountaineer Simone Moro about the triggered and then returned alarm for the Trentino Giampaolo Corona, who had not given any message for more than 24 hours while descending from the summit of Annapurna in Nepal.
Like two other members of the expedition, which consists of about ten climbers, Corona does not resort to oxygen and porters.
“Meanwhile – explains Moro – there are few of us who don’t use supplemental oxygen because now the pool of commercial shipments is there”. “I know – he adds – that several people have reached the summit, all of them use oxygen, Giampaolo did not use it. The level of fatigue between a person who uses oxygen for climbing and a person who does not use it is so definitely bigger The ascent not to compare with the others because he climbed only with the lungs, the others consumed oxygen and therefore arrived at the summit much less tired and also managed the descent better use of oxygen, and it was not the first time that Giampaolo did not use it”.
Moro, who is also a helicopter pilot specializing in mountain rescue in Nepal, was in Everest Valley when he was contacted to take part in the Corona research. “The missions – he explains – involved another helicopter that was already in Kathmandu, to which I have since returned.”
