According to a report by the regional health authorities, 23 people were killed and 36 injured in a bus accident on Wednesday, August 17, south-east of Casablanca, Morocco. It’s one of the deadliest traffic dramas in the country in recent years. Local authorities have not reported foreign tourists among the victims.

The vehicle overturned while cornering on a national road in Khouribga province, 125 kilometers south of Casablanca. The bus established the connection between the metropolis of Casablanca and the rural region of Aït Aatab near the town of Beni Mellal at the foot of the High Atlas. An investigation was launched while the injured were evacuated to Khouribga Provincial Hospital.

In Morocco, road accidents cause an average of almost 3,500 deaths and 12,000 serious injuries per year, ie an average of 10 deaths and 33 serious injuries per day, according to statistics from the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA).

However, Moroccan authorities have taken a number of measures to combat the scourge of road safety following the worst bus accident in the country’s history in 2012. At that time 42 people died.
