Most plan to move, but there are large information gaps regarding financing

ProPellets starts information campaign

Vienna (OTS) – Turnaround in the heating market: More than half of homeowners plan to replace their oil and gas heating systems. But: one in three people doesn't know anything about 75 percent financing. Every second owner is dissatisfied with information about subsidies. proPellets is therefore launching an Austria-wide information campaign with a financing calculator at the center.

The first Austrian report on heating, carried out by the opinion research institute TQS on behalf of proPellets Austria, paints a clear picture: “In Austria there is a great desire to switch to oil and gas heating systems. More than half of homeowners are specifically thinking about switching to a new heating system. One in five people willing to change intends to change their heating system in the next two years”, says Managing Director Christian Rakos of proPellets Austria. “Seven in ten intend to do so in the next five years.”

Cost savings during continuous operations are the main reason

The report shows that Austrians attach particular importance to economic aspects when replacing heating systems. 96% of those looking to switch cite cost savings as the main reason for switching. Specifically, 66 percent are dissatisfied with the costs of their existing heating system. Two in five say they spend more than 2,000 euros a year on heating.

For every second person, contributing to climate protection is also an important reason to move. Fuel supply and concerns about the unavailability of fossil fuels are an important argument for one in three people willing to switch.

Need for financing information

Although there has been one since January 1, 2024 75 percent financing is offered for switching from oil and gas heating to climate-friendly alternatives, such as pellet heating, one in three respondents still do not know about this option. This shows a great need for information and education among the population. “50 percent of respondents would explicitly like more information about financing in order to find the best option for them. This is a clear mandate for us as industry representatives to act. Austria urgently needs more transparent information about heating replacement,” said Rakos.

Pellet heating as the most popular alternative

When choosing a new heating system, there is a clear preference: 60% of those willing to change prefer a Pellet heating. This popularity can be attributed to the numerous advantages of pellet heating, such as:

  • Low maintenance: Pellet heating systems are characterized by low maintenance requirements.
  • Climate neutrality: Pellets are a CO2-neutral fuel produced from national raw materials.
  • Low operating costs: Pellet heating systems are significantly cheaper to operate compared to oil and gas heating systems.
  • Comfort and warmth: Pellet heating systems offer a high level of comfort and welcoming warmth.
  • Quick installation without modification: A new pellet heating system can be installed in two days.

“Young people, in particular, find pellet heating systems attractive. This is due, among other things, to the sustainable and future-oriented orientation of this technology”, says Rakos happily.

The information offensive has begun: Yes! Now pellets

To cover the identified information need and promote the energy transition in heating, proPellets Austria launches the campaign “Yes! Now pellets”. In the center is a web-based financing calculator, which provides information about financing in a specific individual case in just a few clicks. Furthermore, the campaign offers comprehensive information about pellet heating and the associated advantages.

“The first Austrian heating report clearly shows that Austrians are ready to change their heating systems to climate-friendly alternatives,” said Rakos. “The new heating replacement subsidies are having an impact on those who have already heard about the subsidies. Four out of five imagine taking advantage of these subsidies to replace the heating system. With our campaign we want to inform and support people so that the energy transition in heating is a success.”

In addition to subsidies, information is also provided on the speed of installation and low maintenance requirements of pellet heating systems. This is important for nine out of ten people who want to change. The speed and simplicity of switching to pellets is often not yet known. “Four out of every five people who want to change don’t have much knowledge about the topic. A circumstance that will improve with the information campaign”, Rakos is convinced.
