Sen. Joe Manchin’s approval rating has skyrocketed as he has become a staunch opponent of his party’s progressive agenda, but Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is the nation’s most unpopular senator, according to a new poll.

John Thune, a South Dakota Senator and Minority Whip, is the most popular Senator in the US according to a poll conducted by Morning Consult. Manchin is eighth, while Sens. Thune, Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and John Barrasso, R-Wyo., all have 62 percent approval.

Meanwhile, just 33 percent of Kentucky voters approve of McConnell’s job performance as he finds little favor with Democrats and has faced vicious attacks from former President Trump.

Manchin’s approval rating is now 57 percent, up from 40 percent a year ago, according to polls from the first quarter of 2022. In the past year, the West Virginia Democrat has doubled his approval ratings among Republicans in his state.

In December, Manchin killed President Biden’s Build Back Better package when he sounded the alarm about rising inflation. He recently said he was open to tighter billing for social and climate spending.

Having won favor with Republicans, he’s irritated West Virginia Democrats, of whom 54 percent now disapprove of him, up from 32 percent last year. He’s had big gains from independents – approval going from 31 percent to 50 percent.

Manchin’s approval rating skyrocketed more than any other senator, but behind him were Thune, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Alex Padilla, D-Calif., and Mike Rounds, RS.D. all with an approval jump of 10 percent or more.

Sen, Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., posted the biggest drop — his approval rating falling 13 points since the first quarter of 2021. The 82-year-old has served in the Senate for 47 years and will retire in 2023.

The wave of support from across the aisle could benefit Manchin as he eyes a 2024 re-election campaign — Biden lost the Mountain State by 39 points to the former Trump.

Both Manchin and moderate Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, Arizona, have taken strong roles in shaping their party’s legislation, having made it clear they are willing to vote against bills they believe are overly liberal. But while the tactic appears to have worked in Manchin’s favor at home, Sinema has had less success in her home state, where her approval rating has fallen slightly.

44 percent of Arizonans support Sinema, 42 percent oppose it.

Sens. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, one a centrist anti-Trump Republican and the other a right-wing star, have the same approval ratings — 48 percent — in their home states, putting them both among the 10 most disliked senators.

The poll was conducted from January 21 to March 31, 2022 among registered voters in each state.
