A dog that gave birth to puppies in a drainage ditch at night tried desperately to retrieve them the next day as the ditch filled with water and dirt.
The video, captured by a resident of a small town in West Bengal, India, shows the dramatic moments of the search. The canal had been dry the day before, but during the night it filled with water and soil from a nearby pond. The dog had left the birthplace to get food.
The man said as soon as he approached the area, the dog grabbed his pants to pull him to the manhole. Once there, she desperately began digging her nose into the mud to get her pups back to the surface. “There was nothing we could do,” said the man.
At least two female dogs have given birth in this drainage ditch, according to a woman who lives nearby. Little did she know the canal would be filled, “otherwise I would have rescued the puppies myself.”
Luckily at least one puppy was found despite the seemingly hopeless situation. Small and frightened, he has already returned to the loving care of his mother, who will never leave him again.
