A couple was stunned and are now venting after a restaurant in Georgia added a $50 “parents not allowed” surcharge to their bill due to the alleged bad behavior of their “noisy” children.
Lyndsey Landmann and husband Kyle criticized the Toccoa River Restaurant in Blue Ridge. Two weeks ago, Kyle took to Google to post a review saying he was “disappointed with the experience.”
“The owner came to me and told me he was adding $50 to my bill because of my children’s behavior,” he wrote. “My kids watched a tablet until the food came, ate their food and my wife took them outside while I waited and paid the bill.”
Kyle’s wife Lyndsey told TODAY she was horrified – and insisted her brood was well-behaved.
The couple from Florida were there with their three young sons and four other families. Eleven children between the ages of three and eight sat at the table.

“The kids sat at one end of the table and were so well behaved,” Landmann said. “In the middle of the meal I even said, ‘I can’t believe how well behaved they are.'”
After dessert, some parents went to the water with their children – and that’s when restaurant owner Tim Richter came, said Landmann.
Judge told the party about the surcharge on the menu, which states: “Adult Surcharge: For adults unable to raise children.”
“Be respectful of employees, property and yourself. ‘No respect, no service.’
Landman said she expected a compliment and expected not to be charged anything, but Richter said $50 would be added to each bill at her table.
When Landmann asked for an explanation, she claimed Richter told her they were “too loud.”
He was angry that the children were “running around outside” despite being supervised by adults, she said.
“I thought, ‘They were quiet the whole time.’ He got in our faces and told us that we belonged to Burger King and not his restaurant. “We asked to speak to the owner and he said he was the owner,” Landmann explained.
“I looked around the restaurant and everyone froze when they saw the show he was putting on. He screamed.’
The menu includes an “adult supplement” for “adults unable to raise children.” Lyndsey says she was horrified when Judge told her about the fee because the children “were so well-behaved.” She claims the owner became angry and started yelling at her and drawing attention from other diners. The Toccoa Riverside Restaurant is located on a river over an hour’s drive from Atlanta. The eatery offers traditional American cuisine and seafood such as shrimp, scallops and fish
Richter declined to appear on camera, but told Channel 2 News that he introduced the surcharge several years ago during the pandemic.
The 61-year-old said he never threatened to incriminate anyone until a few weeks ago when a family came to visit whose nine children were “running all over the restaurant.”
Richter said he never actually charged the family, just warned them, adding: “We want parents to be parents.”
However, several other Google reviews criticized the quality of service and the owner’s attitude, including one warning guests with children to stay away.
“We were three adults, two children and our four-month-old baby, and when we entered the house they gave us dirty looks,” reads one review.
“Later my wife was rocking the baby (not crying, just so he could sleep) and this ‘manager’ told her that you don’t do that in a fancy restaurant (of course this isn’t a fancy restaurant) and later moved our restaurant Stroller in poor condition.’
A woman who claims to have been at the restaurant wrote: “I was the waitress too. Your $5 tip isn’t worth the effort of listening to your child scream, throwing food or trash on the table or at someone. Why don’t you control your child? Or eat at home!’
The restaurant is tucked away in the mountains, about a two-hour drive from Atlanta.
It offers entrees like catfish, shrimp and scallops with prices ranging from $21 to $39.
The menu says customers will be charged an additional 18 percent gratuity for parties larger than six people, parties that require separate checks and parties that order from the birthday menu.
There is also a $3 surcharge for sharing meals. A notice states that the prices on the menu are for cash payments only and that an additional 3.5% fee applies for non-cash payments.
