Tony Shaloub is back as beloved detective Adrian Monk in the first trailer for Peacock’s Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, released on Wednesday.
Set in a post-COVID-19 world, the film revolves around Monk – a genius detective characterized by his OCD and numerous phobias – who comes out of retirement to tackle one final murder case.
This time the case is deeply personal, involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist who is preparing for her wedding.
The 70-year-old Tony Award-winning actor reprises his role as the disinfectant detective more than a decade after the hit USA Network comedy series last appeared.
“It has been nearly fourteen years since the world has seen a new episode of Monk,” the award-winning original series creator Andy Breckman said in a statement. “The world has changed tremendously in recent years and Monk 2023 reflects the changing world.”

Breckman said he was “thrilled that every one of our stars was so excited about returning” after it was revealed that in addition to Shaloub, the returning cast also includes Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin and Hector Elizondo.
New additions include Caitlin McGee and James Purefoy.
“But when we came back, we wanted to make a film worthy of our legacy,” Breckman added in his statement.

In the trailer, Gray-Stanford’s lieutenant Randy Disher says of Monk, “He’s afraid of heights. It’s his second biggest fear after germs.”
Howard returns as Natalie Teeger and chimes in: “Actually it’s about germs, needles, birds and then height.”
Teeger is then seen driving with Monk in the passenger seat as he reminds them that there is a “bomb” and they need to hurry.
She then crashed her car into another parked vehicle and shouted, “We should leave a message.”

The TV series “Monk” premiered on the USA Network from 2002 to 2009 and ran successfully for eight seasons and a total of 125 episodes.
The dramedy received a total of eight Emmy Awards during its tenure, including three awards for Shalhoub for Best Actor in a Comedy Series in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie streams on Peacock on December 8th.
